  • What do I recieve as an edit?
You will receive a marked up document with any changes highlighted which you can either accept or reject, suggestions in the comment section or questions to respond to. Once you have gone through the manuscript and accepted or rejected changes and replied to any comments, I will go through once again and return the final manuscript with an editing report (a document stating the successes, the changes, weaknesses and suggestions).
  • How do I pay?
The charge for a copyedit is £0.008 per word, this includes two rounds of edits on the manuscript and a final editing report, for more information: Fiction Proofreading and Editing Services | Sophie's Proof (sophiesproof.com) Once we have discussed the project and the manuscript has been sent over to me, I will send over an invoice for the first payment (which is 50%). Payments are all through bank transfer and all details will be available on the sent over invoice. The invoice for the second payment (the remaining 50%) will be sent over right before the end of the project, before I send over the final and fully edited manuscript.
  • Can I have a sample edit?
Yes. If you are looking to work with me on a bigger project (more than 5,000 words) and are unsure that you want to work with me, I can provide you with a sample edit (no more than 1000 words). I can also provide you with an example of an edit to give you a better idea of what you will be receiving.
  • What is the difference between a proofread and a copyedit?
In simple terms: A copyedit prepares the text for it's next stages (formatting, proofreading etc) and has more of an input in making changes to the story. This stage is much bigger than a proofread and focuses on aspects such as: voice and style, language, the story, context, POV, dialogue, consistency and flow etc... Copyedits are completed after the writer has completed a full self edit (a beta edit too in some cases) and is completely finished with their manuscript. This is essential as any changes made to the manuscript after the copyedit will need to be edited again. The proofread is the process of ensuring your writing is free from any errors in spelling, punctuation, grammar, syntax, format etc. The proofread is the final part of editing and must only be completed when the text is completely finished, edited and formatted.
  • How long will an edit or proofread take?
This all depends on the length of the piece. For smaller pieces (under 10,000 words) I will be able to return it to you within a week, even sooner if the piece is shorter. However if you have a tighter deadline, just let me know and if I am able to, we discuss a quicker turnaround. For clients with smaller pieces, I have been able to return their work to them within a day.
