Christmas Writing Prompts

Updated: Jan 30, 2023

It's Christmas!

And what better way is there to celebrate then to do some Christmas writing. As much as it's 'the most wonderful time of the year', Christmas can also be full of emotion, friction and tragedy. Not to be a Scrooge but sometimes that have a great effect in your writing.

So here are some prompts to get you into the Christmas spirit:

The Christmas Dinner

This is a great way to play around with perspectives and make up some interesting characters. Christmas is a time for bringing people together, whether that's a family Christmas dinner or a work's Christmas party. We can't always choose who we celebrate with and that can cause some friction at the dinner table, so why not have some fun and write about that. Whether you're creating a story, or using some memories to inspire your writing. This is also a good opportunity to work on characterisation and dialogue. Another alternative to this prompt is to use fictional characters or people you know in your story.

Christmas Carols

Take the lyrics from one of your favourite Christmas carols and songs and write it in story form. What do you take from the song, how does it make you feel? Tell your version of how you perceive the meaning of that song, or perhaps what it makes you think of/feel. A great option, 'Last Christmas', it holds such a great story that you can interpret and write about.

Share your Christmas

Describe a memory from a Christmas in your past, a time perhaps from childhood or maybe a more recent one. Writing prompts don't always have to pull a story out of you, this is a great way to practice your description and world building. You also never know what it might pull out of you, memories can be the biggest inspirations for stories. Your childhood memories can be completely different to how you remember them, especially when you look back as an adult.

As always, these prompts aren't necessarily there to pull out the great novel in you. Practice makes perfect and playing around and practicing with prompts is a great way to improve your writing skill and develop your skill.
